Plugged into a Raspberry Pi running Home Assistant, Works great – If I have more than 25 devices on my home network, wifi things start dropping off the network randomly. I switched my smart lighting over to the Zigbee protocol, and I basically built a sub-network for smart appliances that took the strain off the wifi network. Zigbee is resilient, it uses a mesh protocol, longer reach through more walls, and perfect for low-bandwidth devices. My only complaint is that Zigbee devices themselves tend to be more expensive than their wifi counterparts.

Upgrade from ConBee II – Would I upgrade to this if I had to do it again -Yes. My previous install a ConBee II running on HA Blue (and before that an old NUC). Now why did I choose to upgrade?

Works flawlessly with Home Assistant on an ancient Intel NUC – I was used the Nortek HUSBZB-1 Z-Wave + Zigbee stick and after a long period of stability Home Assistant was unresponsive at startup. I traced it to the ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) integration and ultimately to the root cause which was the HUSBZB-1. I still use it for Z-Wave but the Sonoff has been rock solid and stable for Zigbee.

So far a solid choice – I immediately used this product with Zigbee2MQTT so all of my opinions are for this setup. I followed the instruction for this adapter on the Zigbee2MQTT website (and may have found a YouTube to give me some more confidence) before proceeding to flash the firmware. The written instructions were a little…rough (I love downloading random .docx files, but YOLO and Linux). If followed, they work and getting the stick to work with Zigbee2MQTT (Home Assistant add-on) was also fairly painless. Make sure you understand the network options in Zigbee2MQTT before setting everything up. It’s a good idea to personalize your network key and much easier to do before you start including a bunch of devices.

Works? – Works as expected. Should make it easier to swap wifi channels especially since the 2.4Ghz band doesn’t have many center frequencies to choose from. Could easily interfere with wifi devices.

It works as advertised – From my research on a few different forums and reading reviews I trust, this was the best Zigbee gateway for Home Assistant. It works. I have no issues to report.
